- MEMBERS WELCOME PLANS FOR SLIMMED DOWN COMMITTEE
About 150 members braved the cold to attend the Consultation Evening in the Nursery Pavilion on December 15th.
Club Chairman, Ian Lovett, began to a round of applause when he said he had congratulated Andrew Strauss on behalf of all members for his two centuries in the test match in India.
He then spent 40 minutes outlining the new governing structure, which will be put to the AGM in the New Year. He and Chief Executive, Vinny Codrington, then answered questions from the floor for over an hour.
He said they wanted to make changes in how the club was run and “if you think they should be different, then speak up”.
The changes were necessary because the whole culture of cricket was changing rapidly with more money in the game, the Champions League, players moving clubs more often, costs increasing etc so Middlesex had to become more businesslike.
We had the biggest committee of all the counties – 18 elected members, chairman, treasurer, president, chief executive and his deputy, and two life vice-presidents. Arguably, with no ground of our own, Middlesex had less duties to perform. Durham, by contrast, a not unsuccessful county, was run by six people.
The key recommendations were a Managind Director of Cricket, the newly appointed Angus Fraser, who would hopefully start early next year and an executive board of 13 people who would run everything and meet at least once a month.
The board would consist of six elected members (two to be elected every three years) in contrast to the present 18, Chairman, Treasurer, Chief Executive, Managing Director of Cricket, Chairman of the Middlesex Cricket Board and two co-opted members to ensure that the balance of skills was right. One of these, for example, might have legal training, a solicitor say, to help with contracts, legal negotiations etc.
He said Middlesex owed it to the recreational side of the game to have an MCB representative aside from finding new talent from this source.
There would still be a membership committee and the majority of the executive board would still be voted on by the members as had been the case for 40 years.
Vinny Codrington said that with a smaller board, it would be easier to make decisions. At the moment, for example, he had to make up to 20 phone calls just to confirm that a player could receive his county cap.
The Chairman stressed – as did Vinny Codrington later – that the main aim next season would be promotion from Division 2 and this too would be one of Angus Fraser’s principal aims although of course, Middlesex would be trying to win everything they entered.
In reply to the first questioner who said the players were unhappy last season, Vinny Codrington said Angus would be the focal point for the players’ problems. We needed more accountability. The Chairman added that we would never be successful without a happy team.
Other questioners thought the executive board did not go far enough – it was still too large. One suggestion was for four elected members while another was for no one being co-opted full-time, but merely brought in to help at various points and with no voting rights. A third wanted the MCB repre
