Belly-ssimo!   WASHINGTON—Nothing’s more American than “Italian” entrées like lasagna, ravioli, and spaghetti with meatballs. And Olive Garden and Romano’s Macaroni Grill, with 568 and 238 units in the United States respectively, are selling a combined $3.4 billion worth of fried calamari, chicken marsala, and other foods each year. The Center for Science in the Public Interest—the nutrition watchdogs who famously called fettuccine Alfredo a “heart attack on a plate” when they first looked at Italian food in 1994—commissioned independent lab tests (for Olive Garden) and examined company-provided data (for Macaroni Grill). Their picks and pans are published in the November issue of the group’s Nutrition Action Healthletter.  By CSPI, USA.
    Congress Needs to Build a Modern Food Safety System, Says CSPI   WASHINGTON—Import legislation under consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee (H.R. 3610, the Food and Drug Import Safety Act) would be valuable, but would still only partially solve the food safety problems threatening Americans, according to a new white paper published today by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest. In it, CSPI reviews a dozen food safety bills being considered by Congress.  BY CSPI, USA.
    New York State Assembly to Hold Hearing on Food Additives, Children's Behavior   Legislators in New York state are exploring the links between certain artificial food additives and behavioral problems in children. Those links have been ignored by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), despite the evidence from more than a dozen studies over the past three decades that artificial flavorings and colorings used in food affect some children’s behavior. The New York Assembly’s Standing Committee on Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Developmental Disabilities is holding a hearing on the topic Tuesday in New York City.  By CSPI, USA.
    Groups Announce Global “Dump Soda” Campaign   26 Oct 07 – US An international coalition of consumer organizations announced the formation of the Global “Dump Soda” Campaign to call attention to the marketing of sugary soft drinks and other high calorie beverages linked to the world-wide childhood obesity crisis.     Rhode Island Hospital/Brown Researchers Land Major NIH Grant   The National Center for Research Resources, part of the National Institutes of Health, has awarded Rhode Island Hospital an $11.1-million grant to study the prevention and treatment of skeletal joint diseases. The five-year grant will establish the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for Skeletal Health and Repair at Rhode Island Hospital and create a multidisciplinary team of scientists with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, the hospital’s academic partner.  By Brown University, USA.
    John P. Holdren: "Meeting the Intertwined Challenges of Energy and Environment"   In a sobering assessment of the world's energy future, AAAS Chairman John P.     Science Receives Spain's Prince of Asturias Award for Excellence in Communication   The journal Science received Spain's Prince of Asturias Foundation 2007 Communications and Humanities Award at a ceremony in Oviedo, Spain on 26 October.     Chilean Researchers Discover Drug-Craving Brain Region in Rats   Chilean researchers have identified a region of the brain—the insular cortex—that plays a role in drug craving in amphetamine-addicted rats, according to a report published in the 26 October issue of the journal Science.  BY AAAS, USA.
    Amid peace talks, Sudan forcibly displaces civilians in South Darfur   29 Oct 07 – As the Sudanese Government’s unilateral ceasefire was last night being welcomed at peace talks in Libya, which have been boycotted by three major Darfuri African rebel groups, Sudanese forces were driving African men, women and children out of an IDP camp in South Darfur.     Methodist praise for UK Holocaust Centre   29 Oct 07 – Vice President of the Methodist Conference Mrs Ruby Beech has praised the work of the Holocaust Centre and Aegis Trust, paying tribute to the founders and urging Methodists to visit the Holocaust Centre in greater numbers. Her comments came on Saturday during her first visit to the Holocaust Centre, accompanied by Rev. Wesley Blakey, Chairman of the Nottingham and Derby Methodist District, and fellow members of the church. They were welcomed by Centre Co-Founder Mrs Marina Smith.  By Aeigs Trust, UK.
    US President’s daughter visits Kigali Memorial Centre   26 Oct 07 – US President George W. Bush’s twin daughter Barbara, currently on a tour of Africa, said that lessons had to be learned from Rwanda’s 1994 genocide. Ms Bush’s comments came during a visit this week to the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre, a monument of remembrance to the one million Tutsi and moderate Hutu peoples killed during a 100 day period thirteen years ago.     Ten second action: protest against UBS underwriting PetroChina   Eight days after Sudanese Government troops and Janjaweed militia destroyed the South Darfur town of Muhajiriya, thousands of residents who fled the assault remain vulnerable to further attack, without sufficient food, water, shelter or sanitation.
