- International organizations in Kyrgyzstan are concerned with attacks against journalists
On December 24 US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan disseminated the message, where it indicates «deep concern with recent assaults against journalists and mass media representatives».
«In the last six month we have seen the number of brutal incidents in Kyrgyz Republic against journalists and political commentators. The last of them – the murder of Gennadyi Pavlyuk, the citizen of Kyrgyzstan, committed on December 16 in Almaty», the message says.
American diplomats appeal to immediate and careful investigation of all cases of attacks and threats.
«Journalists and free mass media play crucial role in democratic and open society and they need to have an opportunity to work in the environment, free of fear and threats», the authors note.
It has to be mentioned that two journalists – Almaz Tashiev and Gennadyi Pavlyuk – were killed in Kyrgyzstan in 2009.
In March of this year Syrgak Abdyldaev, the political observer of Reporter-Bishkek newspaper had to immigrate to Sweden after murderous assault against him: he had 12 knife injuries and fractures of both hands.
In November of 2009 Kubanychbek Joldoshev, the journalist of Osh Shamy newspaper, was beaten. Later on Osh Shamy staff received the letter, containing threats and submachine gun bullet.
In December Russian political scientist Alexander Knyazev and former Chairman of National Security Council Bolot Januzakov (also the team member of ex-President Askar Akaev) were beaten in the same day. Alexander Evgrafov, the journalist of Russian RosBalt news agency, was also attacked in Bishkek in December.
Meanwhile, on December 23 Miklos Harasti, OSCE representative on freedom of the media, addressed the letter to Kadyrbek Sarbaev, Kyrgyz Foreign Minister, where he urges to take determined actions against threatening free press.
On the opinion of OSCE representative, «Kyrgyz government must publicly admit the security crisis of media in Kyrgyzstan and stop treating this trend as regular crime».
Miklos Harasti notes that the violence against free media representatives is also committed to reinforce the censorship of free press. «The counteraction against such threats is very important for observance of OSCE obligations on freedom of media», Mr. Harasti underlined.
He also reminded the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry that this year only two journalists were murdered and few other journalists were beaten in Kyrgyzstan while none of the cases was solved.
«The international experience proves that impunity produces further violence», Mr. Harasti warns.
