25 Local Projects Win 2007-2008 NEA Urban Grants

Forty-eight applications were received for the 2007-2008 grant year representing all six NEA regions and 27 states. A summary of each of the 25 winning projects is listed below by region.

The Lorain Education Association will establish a stronger relationship with the families of their student population in order to impact student achievement.  With the assistance of this Urban Grant, they will institute Family Reading Nights where students and their families will have the opportunity to receive reading materials and learn about language activities that will allow them to engage in reading activities at home. The Guilford County Association of Educators (GCAE) will focus their NEA Urban Grant on mobilizing, organizing, and growing their membership.  Through programs that focus on visibility, training, orientation, service and access, GCAE aims to continue being a successful and growing Association.

This NEA Urban Grant will allow the Robeson Association of Educators to assist new teachers in becoming better equipped to teach in diversified ethnic student population settings by enhancing understanding of cultural diversity.  They will train a team of educators in closing the achievement gaps strategies. This team will then create a best practices instructional guide for teaching and understanding ethnic minorities.  Working with the school system, the guide will be used during new teacher orientation and mentoring for all new teachers.

The primary objective of the Howard County Education Association's Urban Grant funded project is strengthening the skills and furthering the professional development for new teachers by pairing them with experienced highly effective teacher. As a result, they expect a lower turnover of new teachers and improved academic performance of the students of new teachers.

With the financial assistance of this NEA Urban Grant, the Patchogue-Medford Congress of Teachers will form a community partnership to increase their involvement in literacy development, which is especially important to at-risk students.  Through the grant, they will provide educational materials and training focused on literacy.

The Educational Association of Worcester will use the NEA Urban Grant funds to purchase research-based materials and offer high quality professional development through observation and mentoring opportunities.  Through this program, they will grow and develop membership while retaining teachers who hav
