    Doctors at Miami Children's Hospital are treating a 3-month-old Lee County boy who was bitten by a black widow spider. He was bitten at his home in Lehigh Acres and flown to Miami, where Miami-Dade Fire Rescue's antivenin unit, a leader in its field, was waiting with antivenin for the potentially deadly bite.
  • Arrests made in theft of 26 handguns
    Federal agents arrested two suspects Thursday in the June robbery of 26 handguns from a Westchester outdoors store. Only six of the 26 guns have been recovered so far, after a tip from CrimeStoppers led Miami-Dade police to Elvis Steven Padron, 20, and Daniel Esteban Rojas, 21.

    Miami-Dade police have arrested five young men in connection with a hate crime reported about a week ago in which anti-Semitic slurs and symbols were scribbled on a Falls area home.
  • Motorcyclist killed on I-95 identified
    A motorcyclist killed Sunday when he was ejected from his high-performance Suzuki on Interstate 95 has been identified. The victim is 22-year-old Danilo Alibal Recinos, said Lt. Pat Santangelo of the Florida Highway Patrol.

    Cruise operator Carnival said fourth-quarter profit fell 14 percent on higher fuel costs. Net income declined to $358 million, or 44 cents a share, from $416 million, or 51 cents, a year earlier.
