The Federal Reserve's 2007 study of noncash payments released today revealed that in 2006 more than two-thirds of all U.S noncash payments were made electronically. From 2003 to 2006, the period covered by the study, all types of electronic payments grew while check payments decreased. The Federal Reserve's 2004 Payments Study found that the number of electronic payments and check payments were roughly equal in 2003. About 19 billion more electronic payments were made in 2006 than in 2003. In contrast, the number of checks paid fell by about 7 billion over the same period. "a banking location within our own facility," said Carrie Roider, chief financial officer for Erb, a John Deere heavy equipment dealer in Fenton. The service, called remote capture deposit, is gaining ground at banks and businesses across the St. Louis area and nationwide. Banks provide customers with a scanner that they use to convert checks into electronic images, which they send on to the bank via a secure Internet connection. The businesses get quicker credit for the checks they deposit, and neither the businesses nor the banks have to move as much paper around. Before the advent of remote capture, many businesses had to get their deposits to their bank before 2 p.m. to get same-day credit.
