Students can design their own programme of study, acquire knowledge and skills in one or more areas, and decide their pace of varsity education to suit their individual lifestyles. To encourage “Learning for Life”, SIM University (UniSIM) has launched the General Studies Programme today, that allows adult learners of all ages to design their own programme of study at tertiary level, to satisfy and develop their personal academic and intellectual interests, and at their own pace and time. Through this programme, adult learners can choose to specialise in one discipline or combine courses from as many fields of study as they desire, including arts and social sciences, languages, mathematics, engineering, business, IT, counselling and culinary arts. UniSIM will offer students over 150 courses from more than 40 programmes through its four schools. Students chalk up either 5 or 10 credit units (cu) for each course that will last 6-12 weeks. A Certificate is awarded for each course successfully completed. A student may choose to take as many Certificates as he/she wishes. It is also possible for credits for appropriate courses chalked up in the programme to be transferred to other discipline-specific degree programmes offered by UniSIM. Professor Cheong Hee Kiat, UniSIM’s President said, “We are pleased to be the first local university to launch the General Studies Programme, a creative educational approach to self-actualisation. This unique, multi-track programme will appeal to a wide cross-section of adult Singaporeans as it allows learning to be individually customised to meet a variety of learning objectives, be it for self-enrichment, upgrading, acquiring new skills or for mental stimulation and recreation. This is yet another initiative by UniSIM to serve as a university for the people.” Those who may find the General Studies Programme particularly suitable for their learning needs will include the busy self-employed, students pursuing other degrees at the same time, degree-holders who wish to enrich their knowledge in areas outside their initial tertiary education, retirees who wish to learn at their own pace, and those whose job entail frequent overseas travel. Students can take as long as they like to acquire certificates in General Studies, a diploma or a degree in General Studies. Students will
