- Fall 2007 Grades Posted
I have updated the Online Grades this afternoon. All of the existing links there now include final grades in each category. I have added a link to final course grades as well.I hope you all can enjoy some time off over the holiday break!
- Course Grade Posting
I anticipate posting final course grades sometime late in the afternoon on Friday. I'm going to attempt to finish grading the Friday morning finals by midday so that I can turn in grades the same day. (I can't make a firm guarantee though - if my plans do not work out grades might not be posted until early next week.) - Final Call for Extra Credit Assignments
Students coming on Friday for the Music 1 final exam session should bring any Extra Credit papers from the Monday night concert at that time. - Not on Campus Today - 12/12/07
I'm focusing on grading today - and saving some gas - so I won't be on campus. I'll be there on Thursday and Friday for a couple of final exam sessions and a few other things. In the meantime, send me email if you need to get it touch today.
- Grades Updated (12/10/07)
As of this evening, all grades except for test 3 have been updated - check the online grades link in the sidebar.(Extra credit for concert attendance will not be listed until final grades are posted.)
- Last Chance for Fall 2007 Extra Credit Concerts!
The last available extra credit event is tonight. See the Extra Credit page for more information. - An Important Message Regarding the Concert Report Assignment
Unfortunately, while grading the concert reports I encountered a set of four (or so it seems as I write this) concert reports with unacceptable parallels that could only result from an approach to the assignment the violates normal standards of academic integrity, policies for this class, and clear guidelines for the report assignment. Here are some relevant references:From the Copying and Cheating section of the course green sheet:
"Students who cheat or submit the work of others as their own work on papers, tests, or any other course assignments on which collaborative work is not specified are guilty of a serious violation of academic integrity standards and will be subject to substantial consequences which might include any or all of the following or other alternatives: an automatic failing grade in the course, being immediately dropped from the course, reduction in the course grade, disallowing credit for certain portions of the course work, college disciplinary action, and a notation in their college records."
"Be aware that the inclusion of inappropriate uncredited material may take multiple forms. Including the ideas and findings of experts without appropriate credit is one form. Including other students' ideas and observations in a paper that is to be based on your ideas and observations is another. This list is not comprehensive. If in doubt, ask your teacher for guidance."
From the Concert Report Format page:
"The objective descriptions must consist solely of your own observations about the music as performed at the concert you attended. Your paper should not include facts about the music from other sources including: program notes, the web, liner notes, other students, the text, etc. Including uncredited material from outside sources in your objective descriptions will result in consequences as described in the greensheet Policy on Copying and Cheating."
From the Concert Report Checklist
"Your paper consists of your own observations of what happened at your concert. Other students' observations and ideas should not be included in your report or you will earn no credit for the report and be subject to serious consequences as described in the Policy on Copying and Cheating."
From the Concert Report FAQ
"Can I work with another student?"
"You and other students may discuss in general terms the music you heard on the concert. However, be careful that your report reflects yourpersonal observations of the music, and not a group consensus. Your paper must consist entirely of your own unique and personal observations."
"This is not a collaborative assignment--identical papers and papers exhibiting excessive similarities will receive failing grades, and students who submit them may also be subject to disciplinary action for cheating, including a failing grade for the course and being reported to college authorities. (See the greensheet Policy on Copying and Cheating for more information.)"
It distresses me a great deal when students do not follow the normal and expected standards of academic integrity, and I it gives me no pleasure when I assign them a failing grade in the course.
- Final Discussion Topic of the Fall 2007 Term - POSTED
It it now available online... Week 11 Topic - Fall 2007 - One more online topic... later.
I will post one final online topic... soon. Check back. - Quiz Notes
A few reminders/announcements regarding quizzes: - Next Monday is the final regular class meeting of the term. The only quiz that day will be the re-take of this week's quiz - no new quiz.
- Note that there were six points possible on quiz 9. For this reason the relationships between points and letter grades may seem a bit different than on many of the earlier quizzes.
- As discussed in class, my mix-up on this week's new quiz led to some confusion - so I simply gave everyone two points for the items in question.
- Between-Class Music (12/4/07)
"La Valse" by Maurice Ravel - Quiz 10 - Blunder Alert!
I may have used two different versions of the quiz in today's Music 1 classes. The answers to the questions on William Grant Still and George Gershwin were different on the two versions. Groan...Because of this I will not count any errors on those two questions. Everyone will get two "free" points for those question on this quiz.
